"Investing in the Future"

I believe that “giving something more to others is somehow an investment in the future”. Sometimes the belief of giving something to others sounds like exaggerating. No matter what people may say, this I believe, as I had ever felt some experiences about it. It is such an activity that easily said but hard to do.

Two years ago, after the funeral ceremony of my father, I started to realize about the ability of giving. Thus, giving something more to others. I learned something from my father; how to enjoy our life, how to face the problem, how to react toward things happening in our life, etc. The most interesting one I learned from my father was about getting an investment for the future by giving something more to others.

In fact, this happened in my family’s life in the funeral ceremony of my father. My father passed away because of lung cancer. He would be buried in Surakarta as at last having a treatment in the hospital of Dr.Moewardi. At that time, my sister and I were in Balikpapan, East Borneo. My mother left us alone to accompany my father’s treatment in Solo, Central Java. It sounded like a lightning blows to my ears when my mother told me by telephone, “Your father is gone. Be mature, strong, and patient.” I tried to be rigid, then I whispered to my mother, ”This is our fate, God had other plans for us, Let’s take this occurence as a wisdom.”

For a while, a friend of my father picked me up in my senior high school and my sister in her junior high school. My sister started to cry hearing that our father had passed away. As soon as possible, I made her understand that this was God’s plan and we had to approve it as rigid as we can.

Arriving home, I was surprised at the crowd of people waiting for us. They were my neighbours and my parents friends. Everything was prepared by my neighbours, particularly our luggages, our tickets, our necessity for going to Solo to attend the funeral cermony of my father. Unusually intensive, an international departure terminal in Sepinggan Airport was prepared as a waiting room for me, my sisters, and my parent’s friends. This was very exclusive. I never imagined how this could happen. All of us were in grief in the departure terminal. Eventually my sister and I accompanied by three of my father friends went to Jogjakarta by an aeroplane.

In Jogjakarta, picked up by two cars, we were going to Solo with a good reservation. Everything was easier with the help of others. When the funeral ceremony held in Solo, again, I gasped, “Oh there was my father’s friend, coming from Surabaya, Semarang, and Jogjakarta.” Despite my father funeral ceremony not conducted in Balikpapan, our city where we live in, there was still many of his friends from another city. How good, he make a relation!. Many statement of grieving came from many cities outside Balikpapan by the big family of PT. Angkasa Pura 1 throughout Indonesia, his friends from Makassar, Ambon, Jakarta, Manado, Mataram, Bali, Solo, etc. I attempted to interpret this condition, and finally I got something. Perhaps, this was because of his good relation with others.

As I know, my father is generous, quick to help, and respectable. He had done many things for others. Giving something more to others is really somehow an investment to the future, because the effect is not only for himself but also for his family.

Up to now, my father’s friends often help my family, not only by material but also by giving more attention or interest with us whenever we need them. Sometimes, when we were far away from our hometown, I think , “Neighbour is more than relative”, they were like our family. We are born as sosial creature that can’t live alone, do all the things alone, solve the problem in the real world by ourself, we need friends, we need our family , we need others, we need affection, we need moral support, “God creates us not only for doing the worship for Him but also for creating a prosperity, peace, a balance in the earth”
