"A story of a friend who get depressed"

My Friend’s Depression

My Friend was in a depression when he was brokenhearted with his girlfriend. My friend was a good looking boy. He was quite famous in my senior high school because of his naughty and disobeyness. He was the Head of Go Green Organization, an adventure Organization which usually climb and conquer the mountain. He loved his girlfriend and admired her very much. I became closer with him when we are in second level of Senior High school. He often told me about her girlfriend, his attitudes toward her, even His romance.

As time went by, their relationship was getting worse. Perhaps because of his freak attitude showed by him when met her. At first, everything was allright but it became worse in the following time. My Friend couldn’t control himself, and getting depressed because of that problem. Her girlfriend finally want to end their relationship, but unfortunately he couldn’t do anything. He started to behave uncontrolly. He seldom went to school and was not passionate to socialize with other people. Smoking cigarettes and drinking liquors became his activities almost everyday. As his friend, I just can give advices eventhough he agreed at the first but finally he do nothing to implement those advices.

He seemed to be alienated by himself, as he often do everything and spend his time by himself. Camping and Climbing done by him as his pleasure in order to erase his special one from his mind, but he can’t do it. Memories is very difficult to be forgotten futhermore it’s all about love. I believed that he might need time to overcome his problem. A year later, he was getting better. He started to lessen his smoking and drinking activity. As time went by, he started to lived normally and tried to reach his dreams.

"The Story of Mount Bromo"

This is a legend about the creation of Mount Bromo, a famous mountain in East Java, which is so famous with the beautifulness of sunrise and the panorama on it's peak.

A hundred years ago, during the reign of the last king of Pringgondani (13-14 century AD), Gatotkaca, one of the King's wives gave birth to a girl, Roro Kunti. Later, when it was the time, she got married to Parikesit, a man comes from Brahman (priests) caste. After having married with Parikesit, They decided to take an important decision about their life. Actually, because of an unfortunate situation, they were forced to leave the kingdom. They left anything except their clothes, their lovely horse, and a sword. They wandered with no direction just looking for shelter, prevention, and freedom. Five months wandering with no results, finally, they found an area in the foot of a mountain. Having felt cozy and comfortable with the place where they stood, a place with fresh air, fertile soil, and nice atmosphere, Parikesit and Roro kunti determined to live in. They settled an area in the mountain, named "Tengger", a traditional village that has own characteristic in it’s settlers such as using ancient Javanese language to communicate each other and believing in the Mahayana Hinduism. Their unique was “ Every boys who born in Wage’s day in Javanese Calendar had to use an earring in his left ear. (Until now, the village of tengger is very well known).

For years, they were unhappy because they didn't have a child. They were anxious and always ask to the Gods, “ Why weren’t we given child ?” Roro Kunti and Parikesit pleaded. Then, to make it happen, they climbed the peak of the mountain, prayed to gods. Fortunately, the God of fire heard their prayer. Eventually, Betara Bromo, the God of fire, gave them an agreement, he promised them many children, but they had to sacrifice their youngest children. Without Thinking twice and considering the agreement, they surely agreed. “Fyuuuh...let’s go! We have to announce this great news to the settlers of Tengger”, Parikesit chuckled. Finally, Roro Kunti and Parikesit came home happily; joyful, ecstatic, and delighted.

As time went by, they had 25 children. This is the time that they had to sacrifice the youngest, Kesuma. Because of loving him so much, they attempted to hide him. As a consequence, an eruption happened, No one can avoid the fate, although they had done many efforts. Finally Kesuma fell into the crater. Then his voice heard: "I have to be sacrificed so that you will all stay alive,” Kesuma shouted like a wicked lighting blows the earth. “From now on, you should arrange an annual ceremony on the 14th of Kesodo,” kesuma demanded.

As a result, Kesuma's brothers and sisters held the offering ceremony every year by offering fruits, vegetables, and rice, and meats. This is named sesajen. This has been done until today by Kejawen sects. (The Javanese original religion that mixed with Islam.)

"Investing in the Future"

I believe that “giving something more to others is somehow an investment in the future”. Sometimes the belief of giving something to others sounds like exaggerating. No matter what people may say, this I believe, as I had ever felt some experiences about it. It is such an activity that easily said but hard to do.

Two years ago, after the funeral ceremony of my father, I started to realize about the ability of giving. Thus, giving something more to others. I learned something from my father; how to enjoy our life, how to face the problem, how to react toward things happening in our life, etc. The most interesting one I learned from my father was about getting an investment for the future by giving something more to others.

In fact, this happened in my family’s life in the funeral ceremony of my father. My father passed away because of lung cancer. He would be buried in Surakarta as at last having a treatment in the hospital of Dr.Moewardi. At that time, my sister and I were in Balikpapan, East Borneo. My mother left us alone to accompany my father’s treatment in Solo, Central Java. It sounded like a lightning blows to my ears when my mother told me by telephone, “Your father is gone. Be mature, strong, and patient.” I tried to be rigid, then I whispered to my mother, ”This is our fate, God had other plans for us, Let’s take this occurence as a wisdom.”

For a while, a friend of my father picked me up in my senior high school and my sister in her junior high school. My sister started to cry hearing that our father had passed away. As soon as possible, I made her understand that this was God’s plan and we had to approve it as rigid as we can.

Arriving home, I was surprised at the crowd of people waiting for us. They were my neighbours and my parents friends. Everything was prepared by my neighbours, particularly our luggages, our tickets, our necessity for going to Solo to attend the funeral cermony of my father. Unusually intensive, an international departure terminal in Sepinggan Airport was prepared as a waiting room for me, my sisters, and my parent’s friends. This was very exclusive. I never imagined how this could happen. All of us were in grief in the departure terminal. Eventually my sister and I accompanied by three of my father friends went to Jogjakarta by an aeroplane.

In Jogjakarta, picked up by two cars, we were going to Solo with a good reservation. Everything was easier with the help of others. When the funeral ceremony held in Solo, again, I gasped, “Oh there was my father’s friend, coming from Surabaya, Semarang, and Jogjakarta.” Despite my father funeral ceremony not conducted in Balikpapan, our city where we live in, there was still many of his friends from another city. How good, he make a relation!. Many statement of grieving came from many cities outside Balikpapan by the big family of PT. Angkasa Pura 1 throughout Indonesia, his friends from Makassar, Ambon, Jakarta, Manado, Mataram, Bali, Solo, etc. I attempted to interpret this condition, and finally I got something. Perhaps, this was because of his good relation with others.

As I know, my father is generous, quick to help, and respectable. He had done many things for others. Giving something more to others is really somehow an investment to the future, because the effect is not only for himself but also for his family.

Up to now, my father’s friends often help my family, not only by material but also by giving more attention or interest with us whenever we need them. Sometimes, when we were far away from our hometown, I think , “Neighbour is more than relative”, they were like our family. We are born as sosial creature that can’t live alone, do all the things alone, solve the problem in the real world by ourself, we need friends, we need our family , we need others, we need affection, we need moral support, “God creates us not only for doing the worship for Him but also for creating a prosperity, peace, a balance in the earth”
